Larry Whitler - 12 String Poet: Blog
I played the Orange Blossom Opry last night with Robin and I brought my Mom to the show. It was the first time she had been to the Opry and, even though she was raised on Sinatra and The Rockettes she really seemed to enjoy the country and folk flavor typical of the Opry. We performed "Grandma's Quilts" and Suzanne, the emcee, called for a spotlight to shine on my Mom. It was very cool. Afterwards quite a few people stopped by to chat with my Mom about the song and about her quilts! It was a late night but well worth the lost sleep!
After a whirlwind visit to New York City to play an awesome 77 minute set to an enthusiastic crowd on the lower east side I am now back in Central Florida with an exciting gig set for Thursday, August 26, 2010, at the Orange Blossom Opry in Weirsdale! This is an amazing venue and attracts large audiences (usually almost completely fills the 600 seat theater). The gig is a "jam" which simply means I'm not the only act. I'll be sharing the stage with my partner, Robin MacBlane, and we'll be billed as Robin And The Giant. Other acts will be there, also. Most exciting, though, is that my Mom will be there (at almost 84 years young) and so I'm doing a song I wrote about her called "Grandma's Quilts."
News on the two new shows I've been working on for my solo act and my work with Robin MacBlane as Robin And The Giant. That, plus, my opinionated observation on the importance of being yourself.
We first discovered the Orange Blossom Opry, in Weirsdale, Florida, one year ago. It was an amazing discovery because the venue is an old high school transformed into a wonderful 600 seat theater. Top name performers do shows regularly at the Opry and it is an awesome opportunity each Thursday to be part of the line-up for their "Jam Night." We are looking forward to another Jam Night next Thursday, the 25th of March. If you're in the area come on by and say hello!
